Dear Mr. Secretary General,
We, the undersigned, urge you to use your influence and authority as Secretary-General of the United Nations to champion a global ban on whaling.
Cetaceans, which include whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are highly intelligent and culturally complex creatures that play vital roles in marine ecosystems.
However, whaling continues to threaten the very existence of these magnificent animals. Each year, thousands of whales are ruthlessly killed for their meat, blubber, and other products, leading to severe declines in their populations.
Furthermore, whaling has a negative impact on the entire marine ecosystem. Cetaceans are apex predators, and their removal disrupts the food chain with unpredictable consequences.
We believe that whaling is an outdated and cruel practice that has no place in the modern world. The world has changed, and so have our values and understanding of nature. It is time to put the interests of cetaceans ahead of our own.
Therefore, we implore you to take the following actions:
Call on all nations that have not yet done so to join the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling.
Support initiatives to transform the IWC into a body dedicated to the protection of cetaceans, not the regulation of their killing.
Work to raise awareness about the issue of whaling and its impact on the environment.
We are confident that with your leadership and support, we can end whaling and safeguard cetaceans for future generations.
